Academic Services Committee Cultural Enrichment Policies

  1. No program will be made available for CE credit without approval by the Academic Services Committee.
  2. Each Cultural Enrichment program must be sponsored by a member of the LaGrange College faculty.

  3. The program must be available to, and advertised sufficiently in advance to, all LaGrange College students, though obviously all programs are “targeted” to some extent to particular subgroups.

  4. The program must have a definite starting and ending time, and a format where students comprise an audience for at least forty-five minutes. “Walk-around” type programs, or programs where students can come and go as they please, will not be awarded credit.

  5. The content of the program must be in some sense “cultural.” Generally this would mean concerts, performances, and lectures of a social, intellectual, artistic, or scientific nature. Formats other than concerts, performances, and lectures as well as topics not of a social, intellectual, artistic, or scientific nature will be considered by the committee on a case by case basis. “Self-help” programs in most cases will not be awarded credit.

  6. Student presentations such as recitals, senior thesis presentations, etc. will be considered for cultural enrichment credit as long as they meet all the other criteria, and are recommended by the appropriate department chair. The presenter will not receive CE credit.

  7. The sponsoring faculty member agrees to assume responsibility for all logistical arrangements, including room accommodations, publicity, and scanning. In the event of a program change or cancellation, it is the responsibility of the program sponsor to notify the community.

  8. Students who are away on semester or year-long internships or study-abroad programs (precluding Jan-term) may receive up to 5 CE credits per semester for appropriate cultural enrichment programs. The appropriateness and validity of these programs must be vouched for and documented by each student’s sponsoring professor.

  9. Students may receive only one CE credit for an event with multiple performances or presentations (e.g. a play).

  10. Students will not be awarded CE credit for cancelled or errantly advertised programs.

  11. With the exception of special programs sponsored by the administration, LC faculty members will not be paid for presenting Cultural Enrichment programs.

  12. For students who are coping with extreme medical conditions, the Academic Services Committee will consider petitions for a reduction in the number of CE credits required for graduation. The SOURCE office must first verify the condition.
